While Sonic the Hedgehog made a rather disastrous debut on seventh-generation consoles, Sega and Sonic Team have decided to avert this crisis for their Nintendo audience during that game's development. Granted, this was because of the Wii Remote's fancy motion control technology, and when they went for it, they decided to stick their mascot blue pineapple into the realm of Arabian Nights, but in the grand scheme of things, all I ever normally want from Sonic is a good game, which the developers usually deliver on finely. Unlike the so-called "fanbase", that is, in which they berate everything related to the series unless if it appeals to their self-entitled view on what Sonic should be as a whole."Sonic should stick with 2D!""Sonic shouldn't have green eyes!""Sonic and Amy should officially be in love!""Oh no! A single bad game! Sega is doomed!""Oh no! A game based off a Sonic cartoon! Sega is doomed!""This series about a talking blue hedgehog who runs fast and a fat scientist should only ever be serious and edgy!""The shine on Sonic's snout should be lighter!""Sonic Adventure 3, please!"SHUT UP, "FANBASE"!.....Sorry about that. What was I talking about? Oh yeah. Sonic and the Secret Rings. This game plays a lot differently than the usual trend of 3D titles in the series up to the point this game came out. Sonic is the only playable character throughout the adventure, but for other familiar characters, there's a Party Mode in the game that tries to be a lot like Mario Party's minigames, so......there's that. The core game is a mission-based venture in which you must follow the basic instruction the game says you should do in the mission in order to beat it.As for the gameplay, Sonic runs automatically (for some unexplained reason), leaving you to tilt the Remote left and right to steer him along the narrow path, and the level designs cater to the on-rails perspective as a result. However, the Blue Blur is also able to jump, perform his Homing Attack to kill baddies, and this time, fill up a Soul Gauge meter to either speed up faster, or slow down time (the latter of which is pretty pointless). On paper, it doesn't seem so fun, but the actual game nevertheless fulfills a tasty satisfaction when you get the Wii Remote controls figured out. It helps that the levels themselves look pretty gorgeous in their own right, and there's a good amount of nooks and crannies to play around within their designs, such as grind rails, Rings to collect, springs, enemy types, etcNot all is well with Secret Rings, though, as there are certainly some imperfections here and there. For example, for whatever reason, just about every song in this game HAS to have sung lyrics, even in the menus; this can get a bit annoying at times, that's for sure. Furthermore, I do kinda feel like this game would've been better if it just had traditional Sonic Adventure-style controls where Sonic can move freely and not require tilting the Wii Remote back to shimmy backward. Probably the biggest offenders for me, though, are the missions that aren't as good as others. While I do like playing through the missions for the most part (especially ones where you just go to reach the end goal), some of them get on my nerves a little. Some of the boss battles can be frustrating endurance tests due to how if you die, you restart the whole fight, and certain attacks can feel cheap. There's also the flippin' dinosaur egg mission in the Dinosaur Jungle world, where you have to take laps around a portion of the level collecting eggs and putting them in nests ONE BY ONE. To a lesser extent, some timed missions feel like you have to be precise with the way you control Sonic, somewhat turning them into a trial-and-error process. If you get annoyed by such things, this game may not be for you.For everyone else, though, I think Sonic and the Secret Rings is still, regardless of its flaws, a good game. It's far from perfect, but I believe the good in it outweighs what I don't like as much about the experience. For the most part, I had fun playing this one, and I believe it's worthy enough to be enjoyed as a game (Not as a dartboard if you're a Sonic "fan"). Just be sure to expect a bit of flawed play along the way. This is a great game! My kids love the party game (which is similar to Mario Party) and is simple to use (even for my six year old). Hours of great fun!A good and creative story. But not one of Sonic’s strong outings in terms of gameplayReceived it in about a week. I got this for my grandson. Nice game.Fun game with different quests to complete in the typical Sonic platform. Hours of fun if you like Sonic.Doesn't work on my wii.very disappointed
